Plenty of people arrive here thinking a packet of psychoactive plant seeds behaves like a packet of tomato seeds: sow in April, done by August. Some do. Most don't. Peyote (Lophophora williamsii) seed is dust-fine and almost black, and it wants a mineral mix, roughly half sand with grit and a bit of potting soil, plus a minimum of 10C and as much direct sun as you can give it. San Pedro (Echinopsis pachanoi) germinates best in humid, warm, shaded conditions, then needs air moving over the tray. Papaver somniferum is a hardy annual that hits about a metre, flowers in red, purple, pink, and white, and sheds seed in autumn. Sow between September and April, or wait for early spring if your winter bites, then scatter on fertilised soil and barely cover. Sprouting takes about a week. Thebaine is one of the alkaloids in the plant's latex. California poppy comes 100 seeds to the pack, throws orange, yellow and red flowers over blue-green foliage, and shuts its petals at night and on grey days. It handles drought and feeds bees, so it earns its border space.

These are the seeds people type in as hallucinogenic seeds or psychedelic seeds, but growing them is ordinary horticulture with a longer clock. Fine seed goes on the surface with the lightest dusting over it. Keep the medium moist rather than soaked, since overwatering brings rot and fungus faster than anything else. Give the arid species (cacti, Ephedra) sun and drainage they can't drown in, and keep labels on every pot, because a year-old cactus tray is unreadable without them. Slow species reward being left alone: repot rarely, feed lightly, and treat the seedlings as collector plants rather than a crop.
