What a bong is made of
Glass gives the cleanest taste and wipes spotless, and a borosilicate glass bong feels reassuringly heavy in the hand. Silicone is bendy and near indestructible, so it wins for travel. Acrylic is the cheapest way in, though it scratches and stains faster than glass, so it suits a first bong more than a daily driver.
Percolators, ice catchers and recyclers
A percolator adds a second chamber that breaks smoke into tiny bubbles for a softer hit. An ice catcher holds cubes above the water for a colder pull, and a recycler loops the water for even more cooling. More filtration means smoother smoke, but also more parts to clean.
Anatomy in plain terms
The bowl holds your herb, the downstem carries smoke into the water, the chamber is where it cools, and the carb (or a pull-out bowl) lets fresh air in. Joints are usually 14.5mm or 18.8mm, so a replacement bowl needs to match.
