Crystals, Gemstones & Minerals: 20 Stones, Pocket-Sized

Half the stones here aren't crystals strictly speaking. Obsidian is a mineraloid, volcanic glass that cooled too fast to form a lattice; Blue Goldstone came out of a furnace, glass melted with quartz sand. Both sit happily beside Amethyst among the 20 stones in this corner of our smartshop.

Mineral, Rock or Gemstone, and Which Is Which Here

A mineral has fixed chemistry and a repeating crystalline structure, so Amethyst, Malachite and Lapis Lazuli qualify. That pattern is the crystal lattice: the same atoms stacking repeatedly, which is why quartz grows points and halite cubes. A rock is a mix of minerals, so Unakite (granite with epidote and pink feldspar) sits there. Gemstone is a trade word for anything worth cutting or polishing, Topaz and Aquamarine included. Salt Rock is halite, its rose-pink from traces of calcium, iron and magnesium.

Quartz Is Just Silicon Dioxide

Amethyst, Clear Quartz, Strawberry Quartz and Tiger's Eye share one base material, silicon dioxide (SiO2). Amethyst's purple comes from iron traces, Strawberry Quartz's pinks from tiny inclusions, Tiger's Eye's stripes from fibrous mineral bands locked in the quartz. Same chemistry, very different looks.

Where Hardness Comes In

The Mohs scale runs from 1 (talc) to 10 (diamond). Quartz sits at 7, so Amethyst and Clear Quartz shrug off keys and coins in a pocket; Topaz is harder at 8. Malachite is soft at 3.5 to 4, Salt Rock about 2, so it marks with a fingernail and prefers a shelf to a bag.

What Folklore Says, and What We Won't Claim

None of this is a promise, just tradition. Tiger's Eye is traditionally linked to the solar plexus chakra, Unakite to the heart and third eye and used in meditation, Strawberry Quartz to heart-chakra work and grounding rituals. Clear Quartz picked up the Master Healer nickname in the crystal community. Afghan White Jade is associated with calm, Blue Goldstone with ambition and luck.

Chakras and Colour

The chakra system comes from Indian tradition: seven energy centres, each tied to a colour. Folklore pairs stones by colour: purple Amethyst with the crown, blue Lapis Lazuli and Aquamarine with the throat and third eye, green Malachite and Unakite with the heart, yellow-brown Tiger's Eye with the solar plexus, dark Obsidian with the root. An old association, nothing more.

Two Ways People Actually Pick a Stone

By colour or by intention. Blue Goldstone, Aquamarine and Lapis Lazuli for cool tones; Strawberry Quartz, Pink Opal and Tiger's Eye for warm ones. For a room rather than a pocket, choose Salt Rock over the 3-5 cm stones. New to this? Amethyst and Clear Quartz are our most requested.

Natural, Polished, or Born in a Furnace

Clear Quartz and Tiger's Eye come natural or polished. Afghan White Jade and Unakite are natural only, with that matte, slightly chalky raw surface. Blue Goldstone is man-made, as its product page says. All are hand-picked, so shape, banding and colour won't match the photo exactly.

Geodes, Clusters and Single Stones

Amethyst is famous for geodes, hollow gas pockets in volcanic rock where crystals grew inwards over a long time, and for clusters, where many points share one base. Here you'll mostly find single pieces and tumbled stones around 3-5 cm, so if you want a big open cluster, check the product page and photos first.

Where These Stones Come From

Sources shift batch to batch, but the classic origins: Lapis Lazuli and Afghan White Jade from Afghanistan, Salt Rock from the Himalayan foothills in Pakistan, Amethyst from Brazil and Uruguay, Tiger's Eye from South Africa, Malachite from Central Africa. Blue Goldstone has no origin country, being workshop-made rather than mined.

A Damp Cloth Beats a Bucket of Water

Obsidian feels cool and glassy, heavier than it looks, and a damp cloth with a drop of dish soap brings the shine back, as with Tiger's Eye and Clear Quartz. Salt Rock is the exception twice over: its rough grain grabs lint and dust, and soaking slowly dissolves it, so wipe and move on.
