Ma Huang (Ephedra sinica): a desert shrub from northern China

Ma Huang is a perennial shrub in the Ephedraceae family, native to the plains and mountain slopes of northern China and neighbouring parts of East Asia. It grows at elevations of 700-1600 metres in sandy, arid terrain, and that origin shapes everything about how it looks and grows. The stems are slender, jointed, and green, with small scale-like leaves; the overall form is spare and architectural. Ephedra sinica has a long history of traditional use in China, where it has been valued for generations.

Growing Ma Huang from seed

Surface-sow seeds onto a sandy, well-drained growing medium and keep evenly moist until germination. Ma Huang needs full sun and warm conditions to thrive, it is built for open, dry environments, not shade or waterlogged soil. In cooler climates, starting plants indoors gives them the warmth they need to establish before moving outside. Once rooted, the plant is tough and drought-tolerant. Unlike most herbs, it takes patience: this is a slow-growing perennial, not a quick-turnaround annual.

Preparing Ma Huang tea from home-grown leaves

Pick leaves from your plant and hang them to dry. Once dry, grind the leaves and steep 10g in hot water for 10 minutes to make two cups of tea. Pour through a coffee filter to remove plant matter, then sweeten with sugar, honey, or a sweetener of your choice. This is a preparation method only, it is not a dosage recommendation.
