How To Buy And Smoke A Chillum

How to pack and smoke a chillum

A chillum is about as simple as smoking gets, which is exactly why it has stuck around for centuries. Here is the run-through:

  1. Grind your herb so it is even but not powder. A quick pass through a grinder does the job and keeps the draw open.
  2. Drop a chillum stone or a small screen into the cone. This catches ash and stops you pulling burnt bits into your mouth.
  3. Pack the herb on top, firm enough to hold but loose enough to breathe.
  4. Hold the chillum upright, cup both hands around the mouthpiece and light the top as you draw slowly.
  5. Take your hit and pass it on, the way it was always meant to be shared.

Which material suits you

Clay is the traditional pick and the cheapest way in, with a slightly earthy note to the smoke. Blown-glass chillums give the cleanest flavour and let you see when they need a wash, while soapstone feels weighty and cool in the hand and earns a soft patina with use. Wood is the featherweight for your pocket, but it wants a bit more looking after than glass or stone.

The mistake we see most

People pack the cone too tight and wonder why it will not draw. A chillum has no water pulling the air through for you, so airflow is everything. Pack it loose, keep the stone clean, and take gentle pulls rather than one big yank. The hit runs warmer than a bong anyway, so slow is your friend.

Chillum, bong or one-hitter?

A chillum sits neatly between the two. A bong cools the smoke through water for a softer, bigger hit but needs setting up and rinsing; a one-hitter is quicker but holds barely a pinch. A chillum is portable, easy to share and clean, with only the pipe and its stone to look after. Park a spent one in an ashtray and you are done.

Quick chillum questions

Do I really need the stone?
Yes. Without it you will get ash and bits in every draw. The stone is the difference between a smooth pull and a mouthful of grit.
How do I clean it?
Rinse glass and stone in warm water, then soak now and then in isopropyl to shift resin. Keep wooden ones dry and scrape them out gently.
