A liquid culture is living mycelium suspended in a sterile nutrient broth, usually a light malt extract, drawn up into a syringe. There is nothing to germinate as there is with spores, the mycelium is already alive. The cloudy, cobweb-like wisps you can see floating in the liquid are that living mycelium.

Why liquid culture colonises faster

Since the mycelium is already growing, it takes hold of your substrate quicker than spores that still have to germinate, and any contamination shows up sooner so you can catch it. The catch is shelf life: a liquid culture is a live product, so you keep it refrigerated and use it within a couple of months rather than storing it for years.

Liquid culture, spores or prints?

The difference is simply what the syringe holds, living mycelium or dormant spores. A spore syringe and a spore vial hold spores you can keep for a long time, and a spore print stores the raw genetics longest of all. Liquid culture trades that shelf life for speed, it is ready to spread the moment you use it, but it will not sit in a drawer for years.

Inoculating from a liquid culture

Shake the syringe so the mycelium disperses, flame or alcohol-sterilise the needle, and inject through the port into sterilised grain spawn or substrate, spreading it across a few points. Work as clean as you can, ideally at a still-air box or laminar flow hood, because live culture still catches contamination and one dirty needle can spoil the jar.
