Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) Seeds: Part of Ayurvedic Tradition
Ashwagandha, also known as Indian ginseng, is an easy-to-grow shrub that is popular in the Indian Ayurvedic tradition. This plant needs little in the way of moisture and can be moved outdoors once the last frost has passed. It can be planted directly in pots and beds outdoors, or germinated indoors earlier in the year, then transplanted. For another shrubby perennial that holds its shape year after year, there's Rue, though its sap irritates skin in sunlight, so wear gloves whenever you prune or handle it. Cumin, by contrast, is a slim annual sown after the frosts and grown for its seed, so it clears out of the bed by autumn. It flowers around midsummer, with little red berries. The leaves are a pleasant green, and the plant grows fairly bushy and can reach a maximum of one metre in height, if the roots have enough space to grow. It can thrive in partial or full sunlight, and it is not afraid of heat! For height at the other end of the scale, Lemon-Scented Gum (Eucalyptus citriodora)grows into a tree that is raised for its aromatic leaves rather than a metre-tall bush.
If you intend to harvest your ashwagandha, it should be ready after around six months of growth—or some time in autumn, when you lift the roots. Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) asks for no such digging, since it's a hardy perennial that comes back from its rhizomes and spreads happily if you let it. Working on a far shorter clock, White Mustard (Sinapis alba) is a fast annual you scatter about 1cm deep in spring or on bare ground after a summer crop. Full sun and gritty, free-draining soil also suit German Winter Thyme (Thymus vulgaris), though it stays low and woody, and you snip sprigs from it year after year. Fancy filling a whole bed? Our wellness and garden plant seeds stretch from tiny ground-huggers to back-of-border giants.
