CERASTIUM

Cerastium (Cerastium biebersteinii) is a low growing short-lived ground clover with a profuse shower of white flowers in late spring and early summer. It is a rapid growing perennial that forms a thick mat of silvery grey leaves that can become invasive, so don't be shy to really hack into it if it starts to get too greedy for room. Down at the same level but with a very different habit, Nasturtium 'Single Flowered' (Tropaeolum majus) Seeds give you a sprawling annual that finishes with the season instead of a perennial mat that keeps coming back. For a bit of height above the carpet, sow Red Coreopsis (Coreopsis tinctoria) Semi-Tall, an annual that flowers through summer and pulls in bees while the cerastium is already done.

It can be a great source of raw material for composts during its relatively short life providing a lot of foliage in a very short time. Cerastium is a great living mulch that provides dense shade for your garden soil mitigating moisture loss due to evaporation. A mat-forming perennial, it likes full sun and gritty, free-draining soil and spreads sideways rather than upwards, which is what earns it a spot in our flower seed collection.
