Mulungu is the common name for Erythrina mulungu, a deciduous tree in the Fabaceae family native to Brazil's Atlantic Forest and cerrado biomes, with a range extending into Peru and other parts of tropical Latin America. It is the bark that is traditionally used, and local communities across South America have valued it for generations. This pack contains 80g of shredded bark, ready for brewing.

Brewing mulungu bark

The standard method is a simple tea. Add two heaping teaspoons of shredded bark to 250ml of boiling water, steep for 20 minutes, then strain before drinking. The taste is slightly aniseed-like, with a mildly spicy aroma, distinctive enough to stand out from a standard herbal infusion. Tincture is an alternative format for those who prefer it. Start with a low amount if you are new to it.

The tree itself

Mulungu grows to 10-14m tall and is well-branched with a deciduous habit. Its most striking feature is the vivid coral-red to reddish-orange flowers that appear before the leaves, blooming August through November and pollinated by hummingbirds. The tree later bears black seed pods containing large red-and-black seeds.
