Purple Cannabis Seeds and Strains

Violet buds are not a lighting trick or a filter, they are genetics doing their job in the last weeks of flower. The 53 strains here run from soaring sativas like Purple Haze at 19% THC to a 100% indica such as Ayahuasca Purple at 24%, plus autoflowers and one CBD-heavy option. Grape, berry and sweet citrus are the flavours that keep showing up.

Why cannabis plants turn purple

The pigments are anthocyanins, the same compounds that colour blueberries and red cabbage. It is already in the plant; it just gets masked by chlorophyll while the plant is busy growing. Late in flower, chlorophyll production drops and the anthocyanin shows through, which is why purple usually arrives in the final two or three weeks.

Genetics first, temperature second

A strain has to carry the genes before anything else matters. Cool night-time temperatures in late flower can deepen the colour on a strain that already has the potential, but no amount of cold will turn a plant purple if the genetics are not there. That is the whole point of buying purple seeds instead of chasing the effect with a thermostat.

Purple sativa or purple indica

Both exist, and they behave nothing alike. Purple Haze is sativa-dominant, 19% THC, 9 to 10 weeks of flowering, and it stretches to about 160 cm indoors with a creative, sociable, get-things-done effect. Ayahuasca Purple from Barney's Farm is the opposite corner: 100% indica, 24% THC, 8 to 9 weeks, and it stops around 100 cm. One is a daytime smoke, the other ends the evening.

Popular purple varieties

Feminised

Purple Punch is the sweet one, a Granddaddy Purple x Larry OG cross that comes in two versions worth comparing: our own Zamnesia Seeds cut runs 21% THC over 7 to 8 weeks, while Barney's Farm pushes the same cross to 25% and up to 700 g/m2 indoors. Purple Queen from Royal Queen Seeds crosses Hindu Kush with Purple Afghani for 22% THC and a pine-and-lemon nose rather than the usual berry. Purple Urkle, down from Mendocino Purps, keeps the grape note at 22% over an 8 to 9 week flowering time, and its terpenes lean skunky and tropical.

Autoflower

Purple Haze Autoflower keeps the grape and herbal flavour at 16% THC and stays around 70 cm, which is the whole appeal if space is tight. Purple Lemonade Auto goes harder at 22% with a citrus profile, though it wants 11 to 12 weeks from seed to harvest. And if you want the colour without the buzz, Purplematic CBD runs 17% CBD against under 1% THC.

Growing purple weed

Most of these finish in 7 to 10 weeks and are rated easy, so purple is not a difficulty tax. All of them handle indoor and outdoor cultivation, though the colour is easier to trigger indoors where you control the night temperature. Two honest warnings. First, colour is not potency: Purple Haze looks spectacular at 19% THC while the plainer-looking Barney's Purple Punch hits 25%, so pick on the numbers and the effect, not the photos. Second, if you are tempted by Purple Haze x Malawi, know what you are signing up for: 23% THC and a pure sativa high, but 13 to 14 weeks of flowering and a hard difficulty rating. Start with Purple Punch or Purple Queen instead.
