Sizes without the jargon
Regular and 1¼ are short papers for a quick smoke to yourself. King size runs to about 10 cm and suits a shared joint. King size slim is the same length cut narrower, so you smoke less paper and taste more of what's inside. Slims do demand slightly neater hands: the thinner the paper, the less it forgives a sloppy roll.
Tips, roaches and charcoal filters

Rolling papers: your questions answered
- What's the best rolling paper for beginners?
A king size slim hemp paper. Hemp grips better than rice while you learn, and the slim width still keeps the paper taste down. RAW Classic or BEUZ king size slim are safe first buys.
- What size rolling papers do I need?
Regular or 1¼ for solo smokes, king size (about 10 cm) for sharing. King size slim gives the same length with less paper per draw.
- What's a roach and do I need one?
The roach is the rolled carton tip at the mouth end. It keeps the joint open, stops crumbs and saves your fingertips. Pre-cut tips are cheap, so there's no reason to tear up a train ticket.
- Do charcoal filters change the taste?
They mostly remove harshness rather than flavour. The activated charcoal traps part of the tar, so the smoke feels cooler and smoother. Each filter lasts one joint.
- Why are some papers brown?
Brown papers are unbleached: they skip the chlorine whitening step. Less processing, and many rollers reckon the taste is cleaner. RAW built its whole brand on it.
