Rolling papers, sorted: brands, sizes and the kit around them
Know your brands before you buy
RAW
The unbleached icon. Brown papers, a criss-cross watermark to stop canoeing, and a huge range from Classic to Organic Hemp. If you want the lot in one place, our RAW brand page has papers, cones, tips and trays together.
Elements
Rice paper specialists. An Elements king size slim is about as thin as papers get; it burns slowly with next to no ash and adds nothing to the taste.
Smoking
Spanish papers since 1879. The brown Thinnest is the connoisseur pick, the Gold is the show-off pick, and the Blue sits happily in between for everyday rolling.
Mascotte and BEUZ
Mascotte does handy combi packs with papers and tips in one box, plus Active charcoal filters to match. BEUZ keeps it simple: solid unbleached papers without the premium price tag.
Sizes without the jargon
Regular and 1¼ are short papers for a quick smoke to yourself. King size runs to about 10 cm and suits a shared joint. King size slim is the same length cut narrower, so you smoke less paper and taste more of what's inside. Slims do demand slightly neater hands: the thinner the paper, the less it forgives a sloppy roll.
Tips, roaches and charcoal filters
A rolled carton tip (your roach) keeps the end open and the crumbs out. An activated charcoal filter also pulls part of the tar out of the smoke, and you feel the difference in your throat by the second draw. One thing to know: charcoal filters are single-use, so grab a decent-sized pack.
Can't be bothered rolling?
Fair enough. Pre-rolled cones only need filling, and a rolling machine spits out tidy, even joints faster than most people roll by hand. There's a full rundown of how rolling machines work on the blog if you want the detail. Add a rolling tray and your coffee table stays clean.
Our three picks if you can't decide
- Everyday roller: RAW Classic king size slim. Unbleached, reliable, everywhere for a reason.
- Flavour chaser: Elements rice papers with a charcoal filter. The cleanest-tasting combo we sell.
- Weekend novelty: Cyclones Clear transparent papers or Juicy Jay's hemp wraps when you fancy something different.
Rolling papers: your questions answered
- What's the best rolling paper for beginners?
A king size slim hemp paper. Hemp grips better than rice while you learn, and the slim width still keeps the paper taste down. RAW Classic or BEUZ king size slim are safe first buys.
- What size rolling papers do I need?
Regular or 1¼ for solo smokes, king size (about 10 cm) for sharing. King size slim gives the same length with less paper per draw.
- What's a roach and do I need one?
The roach is the rolled carton tip at the mouth end. It keeps the joint open, stops crumbs and saves your fingertips. Pre-cut tips are cheap, so there's no reason to tear up a train ticket.
- Do charcoal filters change the taste?
They mostly remove harshness rather than flavour. The activated charcoal traps part of the tar, so the smoke feels cooler and smoother. Each filter lasts one joint.
- Why are some papers brown?
Brown papers are unbleached: they skip the chlorine whitening step. Less processing, and many rollers reckon the taste is cleaner. RAW built its whole brand on it.
